Centennial Family Update: June 29 Year-End Information

17e2c046 73ec 4a6b 9d24 6ec70800e14b

Students and staff enjoyed a very positive and spirit-filled end of the year. The last two weeks were busy with trips, outside fun, and the celebration of a year of hard work, growing, and learning together. Our final assembly included welcomes, good-byes, and recognition of student leadership, athletic accomplishments, and staff contributions. A little fun was also had with a staff and student "mic drop" that included music, dancing, and inflatable costumes! Thank you to families for your support this year. We look forward to seeing everyone in September. Centennial staff wishes you days ahead that include friendships, family connections, life learning, and restful moments. May the moments ahead become fond memories. Stay safe, and have fun Comets!

The main office will be closed for the summer and re-open on Tuesday, August 25th. Correspondence and emails sent over the summer will be reviewed and responded to during that week. See the school year calendar for next year here: LDSB School Year Calendar 2026-27

Class Placements for 2026-27

Our dedicated team of educators at Centennial dedicates a significant amount of time throughout the school year to getting to know your children and understanding their academic, social, and emotional needs, both in and out of the classroom. Each year we strive to build the best learning environments for all learners.

The school team considers a wide range of factors, including the overall number of students in each grade, student learning styles and personalities, academic strengths and needs, peer relationships, learning skills and work habits, and social/ emotional strengths and needs. All classrooms, whether single-grade or combined grade, include students performing at a wide range of achievement levels. We meet the needs within that wide range through differentiated instruction, a focus on developing critical thinking skills, and by implementing modifications and accommodations for various learning needs. In every case, Centennial staff dedicate a tremendous amount of thought, time, and energy to creating responsive classroom learning environments that support the success of all students.

Families will receive a letter by email on September 1st indicating the class placement for their student(s). A Welcome Back newsletter will be sent to families before the first day of school that shares helpful information, including line-up locations for the first day of school.

Norman Rogers Road Project Update

As previously shared with families, there is upcoming roadwork occurring on Norman Rogers Drive. The following information has been shared with us, outlining the potential impacts that accessing the area will have.

  • The contractor will be starting construction on Monday, June 15:
    • The work will begin at the Sir John A Macdonald and Norman Rogers Drive intersection. Entrance and exit from Norman Rogers Drive will be restricted during construction hours.
    • The road will be reopened overnight and during the weekend.
    • Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction.
    • The initial closure will extend to the east side of Cliff Cres.
    • During school pick-up/drop off, the contractor will have spotters at the intersection to allow tri-board busses through the Van Order Drive intersection.
  • Work is expected to proceed westward in sections while moving the closures along.
    • The project webpage has been updated with an approximate month-month schedule.
    • If work progresses faster than expected, then the contractor will skip the sections in front of the schools and then return in July/August.
  • The contractor is aware of the playground work that is planned at Centennial School in July, as well as the EarlyOn program and Gould Lake pick-up/drop-off during the summer. We will work with them to see what accommodations can be made during construction.
  • The City of Kingston has launched a Get Involved Page to provide information on the upcoming construction on Norman Rogers Drive. The page can be reached at the following link:https://getinvolved.cityofkingston.ca/norman-rogers-drive-improvements.

Centennial Playground Project: Phase 2

We are excited to announce that the Centennial Playground Project will continue this summer. Along with a few other LDSB schools, Centennial has been granted a new WOW playstructure. The project will include the following:

  • Installation of the WOW Playstructure just northwest of the current baseball backstop.
  • Existing climber by the portables will be moved to the east field area, where the "blue cheese" structure and other climbers are located.
  • Maintenance to the forest area, including tree pruning and additional fill added between large boulders to mitigate trip and fall hazards.
  • Paved accessibility pathway to be added from the east corner of the school to the climber area.
  • Soccer Posts updated and installed in East Field and Middle Field

Health Unit Update: Encourages proper Hand-Washing

The Kingston health unit is actively tracking a recent outbreak of cryptosporidiosis—a parasitic stomach illness—in the Kingston area.

Symptoms: Symptoms typically start 2 to 10 days after exposure and include watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, cramps, and fever.

Prevention & Advice: The health unit urges anyone experiencing symptoms to stay home. Frequent handwashing with soap and water is essential, as alcohol-based hand sanitizers are ineffective against this specific parasite. If you have had diarrhea, health officials advise staying out of swimming pools, hot tubs, and splash pads for at least two weeks after your symptoms have stopped

Ministry Resources for Reading and Math

There are many resources available to support your students’ learning in math and literacy, offering engaging activities that make learning both fun and effective for students and families. To explore these tools, visit Limestone’s Online Learning Resources and Tutoring webpage.

Host an International Student – Be a Part of Kingston’s Global Community

Limestone is proud of our long tradition of hosting students from other countries. The demand for Kingston, and Canada, as a learning destination is rapidly growing. Students from over 15 different countries are here now staying with great homestay families in Limestone. Our International Education team is looking for more families to become homestay hosts to international students.

We currently have 19 students on our waiting list that have applied to Limestone for 2026-2027 and need a home. They range from one semester to one-year stays and are from Germany, Spain, Japan, Brazil, Slovakia, Czechia, Italy, and Denmark.

Host families will be paid a tax-free monthly stipend to host students. All students in the program attend local intermediate or secondary schools and range in age from 12 to 17 years of age. Our International Education team works hard to make a great match for your family, that can last a lifetime.

Families can learn more by visiting internationaled.limestone.on.ca or phoning the International Education offices at 613-544-7745, ext. 288.students’

Family Literacy First aims to bring parents and children together to practice family literacy through free online resources. The program offers resources in different languages, including English, French, Simplified Chinese, Tagalog, and Arabic, so families can learn together in their first language, or practice a second or third language. Resources include stories, games, and activities that you can engage in with your child to build literacy skills, grow confidence and offer connection time with your child. See the RESOURCES PAGE HERE

Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.
