Centennial Public School September Update

Staggered Entry
The staggered entry model of A Day and B Day continues until the end this week. Both A and B groups will attend every day starting on Monday, September 14.

On-line Remote Learning Students

You will receive regular online check-ins from your Centennial teacher for the next couple of weeks until you are placed in a remote learning classroom and assigned a new teacher at the Limestone DSB Virtual School.  If you have questions regarding online learning, please email virtualk8@limestone.on.ca . Students may enrol in the Limestone Virtual School until September 14. If you have school device from last year, please return it so that it can be prepared for this school year. A new device will be allocated to you for use during online learning if one is needed.

School Organization and Enrolment
Our school organization is 9 classes which was based on projected enrolment numbers from the spring. Our actual number of students in September is what our school staffing will be based on for the remainder of the year. There is a possibility that we may need to reorganize classes based on our actual enrolment numbers and families will be notified of this next week. If you are considering a change from remote learning to face to face learning, please notify the school as soon as possible, no later than September 14,  to ensure that we will have space for your child in a class.

Technology Return
If you have school technology, we ask that you please return it with your child as soon as possible so that we can prepare them for classroom use and online learning. We require that all of our school devices, including chargers and cords, be returned to the school. Send them with your child and they can give them to their classroom teacher. If you are an online learner, please return your device to the main office. Thank you!

COVID-19 Screening Tool
A paper copy of the KFL&A Public Health On-line Screening Tool was sent home with each student last week. Parents and caregivers should review the checklist with their child before sending them to school each day. In addition to the following symptoms, if your child has had close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the past 14 days or if you or your child has returned from travel outside of Canada in the past 14 days, your child will need to stay home and self-isolate.

The symptoms are:

  • Fever
  • New or worsening cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore throat, trouble swallowing
  • Runny nose
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Not feeling well
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

When a Student or Staff is Sick at School
All students and staff must self-screen every day before attending school using a checklist before arriving at school. If a student or staff member is experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, they must stay home from school and should seek testing and appropriate medical attention. If a student or staff member feels sick, or develops symptoms while at school, schools will follow the following protocol:

  • Students or staff who develop COVID-19 symptoms will immediately be separated from others, and the family will be contacted to arrange immediate pick-up.
  • Staff and families will be directed to consult their health-care provider and should be provided with information about COVID-19 testing locations.
  • Staff and/or students who test positive may not return to school until they are cleared by KFL&A Public Health.
  • Staff and/or students who test negative can return to school once they are symptom-free for 24 hours.
  • Limestone schools will immediately report any suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 to KFL&A Public Health.
  • Limestone schools will participate in contact tracing through keeping records of attendance, classroom seating, bus seating, and visitors to the schools.
  • KFL&A Public Health will be providing a flow chart to families and schools to help provide a visual of these guidelines to follow.

Dress for the Weather
Students will be going outside for two recess breaks and possible outdoor learning every day. Please ensure that your child comes to school with a warm coat, hat, gloves/mitts, and footwear each day for the cooler weather and appropriate rain gear for rainy weather.

Lunch and Snacks
We will be sending home all student recycling and garbage from lunch and snacks this year to limit the handling of student packaging and food. Thank you very much for your understanding.

The Food Sharing Program will begin next week with ‘grab and go’ snack bins in each classroom for each of our two Nutrition Breaks. This food is available every day for students who do not have food. There will not be a Breakfast Program this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

School Council Meeting and Elections
Our first School Council Meeting will take place on Monday, September 14 at 6:00 p.m. outside at the front of the school. All parents/guardians of Centennial students are invited to attend the meeting. The rain date is Tuesday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m.  We will be holding elections for Executive positions at this meeting. Please consider being nominated for one of our elected positions for the school year: School Council Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson (or Co-Chairperson), Secretary, Treasurer, and Member-at-Large. Our 2019-20 School Council Chairperson, Melissa Hudson, is willing to continue in this role for this school year and will be putting her name forward for the position of Chairperson. Thank you, Melissa!  We look forward to seeing many parents and guardians at our first meeting for the 2020-21 school year.
