How to Report an Absence

Advance Absence and Notification Program

Students are expected to attend regularly, be punctual and participate in all classes. Children who must leave for an appointment must have a note, and must be picked up and signed out at the school office. Students who are absent from school must bring a note from home explaining the absence.

The Absence Program was put in place in order to ensure that children arrive safely at school.

When a student will be absent, parents are expected to:

Telephone the school (546-5517) before 9:00 a.m. for a morning or all day absence or before 12:15 p.m. for an afternoon absence. The answering machine is available 24 hours a day. We are concerned when a child is not present.  If we have not heard from a parent, we will phone the home or place of business to clarify why the child is absent.

Send a note to the home room teacher with a sibling, relative, neighbour or friend before the beginning of school in the morning or afternoon.

Send a note or telephone the school a day or more in advance for hospitalization, trips, appointments, etc., indicating the date of return to school and days to be absent. Any change of plans should be reported to the school. If your child will be absent for a longer period of time, whether at home or in the hospital, and is capable of doing some school work, please notify the teacher. Arrangements may be able to be made for a visiting teacher service to continue the programming.

The home room teachers will notify the office at 9:20 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. of the absence of any student for whom they have not received an explanation for the absence. The secretary will compare this information with any phone calls or notes that have been received by the office.

For any students who have been unaccounted for, the secretary will attempt to contact the adult listed on the Registration Form and/or yellow Advance Absence Card. If the parent/guardian cannot be reached at home, additional names and telephone numbers will be contacted, if provided.

Your cooperation in notifying the school when your child is absent for illness, appointments, etc., is essential and greatly appreciated.

There is a sign in/out book in the office. When a parent is picking up a child during the school day, the parent must report to the office, sign out his/her child and the student will be called to the office to meet his/her parent. If the student returns during the school day, he/she needs to be signed in at the office.

Students shall leave the school only with a custodial parent/guardian, unless written communication from the parents indicates otherwise.

Late Arrival
All latecomers must report to the office upon arrival. Student lateness is recorded by the teacher. Repeated lateness will result in home contact.

Request for Alternative Pick Up Arrangements
There are occasions when parents or alternate caregivers wish to pick up student instead of the usual arrangement.

Please note the following:

A written note is required for students to remain at school instead of taking the bus.
The alternate adult picking up the student must be listed on the advance absence card. If not, we may not release the child without specific authorization from the parent.
Please do make arrangements with your child before the school day begins.

Child Care
Frontenac County child Care provides care at Centennial Public School 7:30 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. For further information contact F.C.C.C. at 542-0060.

Security Measures
All staff members will be on alert and will intercept anyone whom they do not recognize in the school or on school property. Staff do not know all parents personally, so it is important that all visitors to the school wear a visitor’s tag while in the building.

All visitors, including parents, and non-school personnel are required to report to the office and sign in when arriving  on school property or entering the main school building. There is a sign-in book in the main entrance hall of the school.

After signing in, all visitors and parents who plan to stay in the building will be required to wear an identification tag which is obtained in the main office. Supply teachers and volunteers will wear identification tags. Individuals providing a service for the school will also wear an identification tag.
